Sri Lanka is a melting pot of cultures. After India, it is said that Sri Lanka has the most number of festivals than any other country.

The myriad of festivals celebrated in the country is a wonderful chance to experience the diverse culture and rich tapestry of the local lifestyle.

While Sinhalese, Tamil New Year, and Kandy Esala Perahera are popular festivals native to the region, another religious and cultural festival that is celebrated island-wide is Vesak, the most famous Buddhist Festival of the year. A festival recognized internationally by the UN to appreciate the contribution of Buddhism.

Vesak- Festival of Lights in Sri Lanka

Also referred to as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Day, Vesak is observed by Buddhists all over the world.

The month of May in Sri Lanka not just brings with it the thundering South-West monsoon rains but also marks the commemoration of the birth, enlightenment, and death of Gautama Buddha during Vesak.

It is celebrated on full moon day in the month of May. However, celebrations continue for about a week. It’s the perfect time to see the streets of Colombo come alive. Almost overnight, laid-back and relaxed Colombo turns into a glamorous and glittery seaside capital.

You’ll see nooks and corners of the city dressed in lights, colorful lanterns called Vesak Kudu, which signify the light of Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, pandals (thoranas), and dansals (free food stalls).

Celebration of Vesak in Sri Lanka

Though Vesak is of religious significance for Buddhists all over the world, to Sri Lanka it is what Christmas is to the West. While it is a festival of togetherness and rejoicing the birth and enlightenment of Lord Buddha, it is also a time of reflection on his death.

On Vesak, Buddhist devotees assemble in various temples for the honorable hoisting of the Buddhist flag and the signing of hymns of the holy triple gem: The Buddha, The Dharma (his teachings), and The Sangha (his disciples).

Buddhist men and women are usually clad in white and visit the holy temple throughout the Vesak week to participate in traditional ceremonies. Some even spend the entire day in the temple to prove their determination to follow the preaching of Buddha.

Vesak is a sign of sharing peace and joy with people. The sale of alcohol and meat is usually prohibited during the festival.

Vesak: Past to Present

Although festivals like Vesak are century-old traditions, it was only in 1950 that Sri Lanka agreed to celebrate Vesak as Buddha’s birthday. Most Buddhist devotees spend time in reflective prayers. The streets across Sri Lanka are decorated in celebration for this important event.

Many activities to are conducted in the temples, including devotional song campaigns, almsgiving, and lighting of Vesak lanterns. Tiny clay coconut oil lamps are also lit across villages in Sri Lanka and major cities including Colombo, Galle, and Kandy.

There are also electrically-lit pandals, also referred to as ‘thoranas,’ erected in towns of main cities. Welfare and religious groups sponsor most of these. Each pandal illustrates a story from the Jataka tales (550 past life stories of the Buddha). During Vesak, a large crowd of people gathers around the pandals to attentively listen to the story.

Vesak Lanterns/Vesak Kudu

While Vesak Pandals are illuminated and presented beautifully, another visually stunning spectacle is the colorful lanterns, also referred to as Vesak Kudu that is hung along the streets and in front of houses.

These towering lanterns are made from bamboo frames and covered in colored paper. The lanterns signify the memory of Buddha who delivered Dhamma’s message.

Vesak Lanterns

During ancient times, clay lamps were trendy, after which candles were used for illumination. Then colorful lanterns were made in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Creating Vesak lanterns has become a skillful art and competitions too are held by many associations. Valuable prizes are given to those that create the most beautiful lamps.

How to Make Vesak Lanterns?

The making of Vesak lanterns is one of the most important activities carried out in the month of May. Although lamps are readily available, the excitement of making them yourself is unparalleled.

Each year, there is a change in the art of making lanterns. People like to display their creativity and tell different stories through these lanterns.

A Quick DIY to Make Vesak Lanterns – Watch the Video

If you are a beginner at making Vesak lanterns, here’s a step-by-step guide. One of the traditional Vesak lanterns is called the “Atapattama” (octagon-shaped lantern) and can be decorated in beautiful shades with long frills.

What you need:

  • Twenty-four bamboo sticks of the same length. If you can’t find bamboo, any sort of wooden strips will be excellent too.
  • Twine – lightweight string
  • A sheet of board
  • Decorative materials for the lantern: colored tissue paper, transparent plastic sheets, or wrapping paper.
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Small candles placed in metal dishes

Instructions:

  1. With the 24 sticks and twine, make six squares and tie each square with diagonals. It should be done in such a way that the string is stretched in both directions from opposite corners. Ensure your squares are perfect. To add strength to the lantern framework, you can also add glue to each of the intersections.
  2. Now you have to tie each of the squares together. Here comes the tricky part. Get help from a friend who can hold the squares while you tie it.
  3. Decide the face of your base. You will need to cut a cardboard piece to fit the base. You could also let the board sit on the sticks. Since this is the base where your candle will rest, it has to be quite long-lasting. Thus, we would recommend using glue.
  4. Tie a string to the two opposite corners on the top of your frame which will hold the lantern together.
  5. Next, you will have to cover the framework to add strength to your lantern. You can also have cut-outs in some places to make the lantern look beautiful. When attaching decorative elements, think about the finished look of your lantern. Before pasting everything together, do all the cutting and painting. If you’re using candles, don’t cover the top. Otherwise, you may end up burning the entire lantern down.
  6. The best way to give your lantern a finishing touch is by hanging colorful tissue/crepe paper strips. You could also paint the pieces with glitter to create a dazzling effect at night. If your lantern is strong enough, you could even hang smaller lanterns from the corner.
  7. Place your candle or light bulb on the base of your lantern.
  8. Hang your lantern where people can see it and light it up at night. For candle-based lamps, you need to be extremely careful as there’s a chance of the lantern catching fire.

During the summer holidays, many schools have Vesak Kudu Nirmana workshops that teach children how to make their own origami lanterns. It’s not just fun but exciting too for them.

Vesak Lanterns

Significance of Vesak Festival

  • Bringing happiness to others: Vesak is celebrated all over Sri Lanka to bring joy to the unfortunate like the aged, handicapped, and sick. On this day, Buddhists usually distribute gifts in cash and kind to various charitable homes throughout the country. It is a time of great joy and happiness as people from all walks of life get together to illuminate and decorate the capital.
  • Paying homage to the Buddha: The teachings of Buddha also have instructions on how to pay him homage. He advised everyone not to cry over the disintegration of his body but to regard his physical teachings. He also stressed that the way to pay homage to him was not merely by offering flowers, incense, and lights, but by honestly and sincerely striving to follow his teachings. That is why devotees wear simple white clothes to perform religious observances.
  • Sri Lankan Festival Food: No festival is complete without refreshments. All around the Buddhist temples, you will find food stalls set up by Buddhist devotees called dansalas offering free food and drinks to passers-by. From rice and curry to sweetmeats, ice creams, and pickles, the food stalls offer the purest prasadam.

Vesak is the best time to visit Colombo as you get to witness a massive influx of people from all parts of the country. Being a festival of togetherness, it transforms the capital into a sparkling wonderland that is richly decorated with Vesak lanterns everywhere.

It is also a great time for tourists to enjoy the respite from the pre-monsoon heat of the southwest up in the hills of the east.

In the course of its celebration, it brings contentment to the people that spread throughout the country. That is the magic of Vesak.

Rail buses have been around for decades. While the advent of traveling sustainably has led to Hyperloop’s birth and other similar transport modes, we take you through the services of railbus in this tear-shaped nation and how it is every Lankan’s best traveling partner.

The public in Sri Lanka is dependent mainly on the road network. The bustle on Lankan streets is primarily occupied by the buses and tuk-tuk walas. Roads of the country are flawless; however, few roads in rural areas propel people to take different transport modes.

Sri Lanka’s Rail Buses

The other mode of transport being — railways. This tiny island country is known for having a very exhaustive railway network. There is no denying that trains offer the most jaw-dropping view of the country.

The introduction of trains in this land is mainly credited to the British. Nevertheless, with help from a neighboring country like India, the people of Sri Lanka found a cheaper and alternative travel service — Rail Buses.

Since the early 1930s, the railbuses have been the crowd’s favorite due to the characteristics and appearances similar to that of a light railcar. With time, countries are slowly replacing this age-old vehicle with modern light railcars.

Rail Buses

How is the railbus faring in the island country lying in the Indian Ocean? What places does it connect to? Answers to questions like these will be found below.

Known as a lightweight passenger rail transport system, Railbus shares most of the features with the bus. This old-time vehicle sports the same body as the bus; however, the bogies and wheels have no similarity with the bus.

Railbuses were typically designed for commuting on fewer-used railway tracks, more specifically in countries like Germany, Italy, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. The use of railbus steadily gained momentum in other countries as well. As of now, this timeworn mode of transportation is used less and is being replaced by modern railcars.

Rail buses in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a small island with picturesque views everywhere you set your eyes on. A country with a population of over 20 million — has trains, buses, and flights to make traveling more comfortable and affordable.

Railbus are prominent in the Eastern province — where this vehicle connects towns and cities. This mode of transit was initially built by converting two buses that were made explicitly for road transport.

The addition of railbus in Sri Lanka has received enormous support from its neighboring country, India. For years, India has been lending a helping hand in Sri Lanka’s railbus projects, which have been acknowledged and well-received by the regular commuters.

The Railway Department has taken umpteen measures in promoting the railbus service. Currently, this vehicle runs from Chilaw to Puttalam, Batticaloa to Galoya, Trincomalee to Galoya, Anuradhapura to Medawachchiya, Kurunegala, Mahawa, Peredneiya to Kandy, and from Maharagama to Kosgama.

India’s Help in Sri Lanka’s Railbus

India’s support to the island’s transportation system is lauded and appreciated. The neighboring country’s help in building railbus aims to make transport between two cities rapid and cost-efficient.

In 2009, India offered 10 buses worth of Sri Lanka Rupees (SLR) 44 million to the Lankan Railways. In addition, the peninsular country provided another SLR 22 million for the cost of conversion of buses into railbus units.

Sri Lanka had purchased 10 Ashok Leyland buses from India, which were used by the former as their railbus. These ten buses were later converted to 5 rail buses; each of these buses was coupled to drive on either side.

These buses were known as the ‘Viking,’ which are also used for inter-state traveling. The conversion process of bringing the railbus on track is carried out at the Sri Lankan Railways workshop situated in Ratmalana.

The journey when traveling in a railbus is a worthwhile one. The maintenance cost of operating railbuses is relatively lower, as opposed to the regular trains.

Back in 2017, Nimal Siripala De Silva and Deputy Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anuraha Jayarathna had kicked off another railbus starting from Peradeniya to Gampola. The ministers inaugurated this line because of the overwhelming plea made by the public of these regions.

The ride is thrilling with a blend of excitement and uncomfortable, which is bumpy on most occasions. These train cum buses operate on two routes — from Anuradhapura to Medawachchiya and Maho Junction to Polgahawela Junction.

Rail Bus Service from Gal Oya To Trincomalee

The famous route that travelers often prefer taking is the one from Galoya to Trincomalee. There is one local train each day from Gal Oya to Trincomalee. While there are three local trains per day running from Kantale to Trincomalee.

Safety in Sri Lankan Trains

Be it Sri Lanka or any country globally; security is an issue that halts many to plan a sight-seeing trip. A poster campaign was launched in crowded places like railway stations, bus stops, Bandaranaike International Airport, and a few other famous tourist destinations across the island.

This campaign was brought into existence to create awareness when traveling across the country, featuring essential contact details. The Tourist Police Division of Colombo promoted the campaign along with the British High Commission in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka, also known as the ‘Land of Serendipity,’ is home to mesmerizing views that comprise amazing beaches and bewildering wildlife. This tiny island is pleasing in every facet — be it the ancient ruins and diversity.

sri lankan rail bus inauguration

Oodles of elephants and embracing people make it even more rewarding to visit this country. Not to forget, the famous tea and delectable food are what give Sri Lanka an upper hand when jotting down places to visit for a vacation.

The trains or, more precisely, the railbuses are something that you need to get on board. Ask the locals, enquire from the officials; this mode of transport is economical and takes you to places in a brisk.

Sri Lanka is exciting, and traveling around the country is challenging when there is no information in hand. Any ideas or suggestions in the comment box on how one can make it from point A to point B in this country will be appreciated.

Sri Lanka is infused with ancient culture, the debris of religious relics, beaches, reefs, and some astounding hills. But there is a lot more to it than just this.

The country is blessed with sublime flora and fauna alongside montane forest on national parks across the tiny island nation.

Sri Lanka has a total of four biosphere reserves – Sinharaja Hurulu, Bundala, and Kanneliva. With Bundala’s rich history and awe-inspiring wildlife, here is a detailed guide to this vast national park.

Bundala National Park

Located 15km east of the town of Hambantota, Bundala National Park has lured locals and globetrotters with its exquisite range of wildlife.

This national park offers solace for anyone in search of it. Although, not that significant when compared to the Yala National Park, Bundala should find a place in your itinerary.

In 1991, the national park had become the first-ever wetland in Sri Lanka, which was declared as a Ramsar site. According to Wikipedia, a Ramsar wetland site is classified as of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Accommodating close to about 197 species of migratory waterbirds, Bundala National Park was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2005.

So without further ado, let us share with you a few pieces of information about this not-so celebrated wetland of Sri Lanka.

Declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1969, Bundala National Park was promoted to a national park on the 4th of January 1993. Initially, the national park stretched about 6,216 hectares, which later reduced to 3698 hectares in 2004.

Bundala National Park: Things to See

The national park boasts of birds and mammals, which are a treat to watch for visitors arriving between September and March. Sheltering about 32 diverse species, this national park is a haven to five endangered mammals.

That being said, the mammals that garner massive spotlight are Sambar(Southeast Asian deer), Fishing cat, Jackal, Wild boar, Toque Macaque, Sri Lankan leopard, and many more.

The aforementioned species belong to the list of 324 species of vertebrates, comprising of 197 birds, 32 mammals, 48 reptiles, and 15 amphibians. To broaden this list, there are over 52 species of butterflies that certainly create a lasting impression on a visitor.

Bundala’s flora is also nothing less short of significant either. The national park comprises of 383 plants belonging to a total of 90 families. Out of the 383, six are endemic species, and seven are nationally threatened. The park’s lagoon is home to Hydrilla, which is visible with a shade of blue-green algae on it. This easily overshadows Oscillatoria, Nostoc, and Macrocystis.

Bundala consists of trees like Manilkara hexandra, Salvadora persica, and Drypetes sepiaria, Bauhinia racemosa, Azadirachta indica, & Chloroxylon swietenia. Also, featuring a few salt-tolerant plants such as Halosarcia indica and salicornia.

Birds at Bundala

Bird watching is more famous in Sri Lanka, which is a paradise of inherent birds. Due to favorable climatic conditions, birds of different species take refuge in the country’s national parks. And Bundala National Park is one of those parks which is a haven to numerous birds.

Of all the quaint views offered by the Bundala National Park, watching birds is genuinely one of the mesmerizing activities. Including nearly 200 species of birds, out of which 58 are migratory birds.

During September and March, migrants such as Marsh and Curlew Sandpiper, Curlew and Greenshank Golden and Kentish Plover, Large, and Lesser Sand Plover visit the Bundala National Park. The most famous and observable bird is the Great Flamingo, which has outnumbered broad-billed Sandpiper and Red-necked Phalarope.

Bundala’s lagoons has lured in a range of aquatic birds, some of which are ibis, pelicans, painted storks, teals, egrets, and spoonbills. Including few endemic birds like the Brown-capped Babbler, Sri Lanka Woodshrike and Junglefowl.

There is diversity in species of birds and mammals, which draws visitors in large numbers throughout the year.

Bundala: Getting In

Bundala is considered as a better alternative to the Yala National Park, which is overcrowded with people who wait in a queue to get a glimpse of giant elephants.

To enjoy the atmosphere of this national park, you need to spend about 5000 Sri Lankan Rupees (roughly about USD 27) for a safari tour of two passengers. This safari tour includes a jeep and a guide.

There are a variety of options when taking a detour of the park, with few options taking you to the hidden temples, while some packages bundles with accommodation and tour.

Bundala National Park is loaded with a handful of options when it comes to accommodation. There is a space for anyone irrespective of their budget. Bundala’s exciting staying options include – camping-like hotels lade with hot showers and mosquito nets.

Some accommodations might want you to walk a bit or share a ride, solely because of the vastness of the area. Albeit, the entire trip to the park is in itself a journey of sheer delight, offering a chance for you to witness the wilderness and coasts. With a multitude of accommodations around the park, you will never be short of information and local guides.

The tiny teardrop island in the Indian ocean has, for decades, lured in travelers from across the globe. Bustling cities with hospitable people make your stay even more memorable.

Sri Lanka’s tourism is divided into three different categories – beaches, cultural cities, and nature reserves. The small island nation is abundant in all these categories. Amongst the few historically rich reserves in Sri Lanka, the Gal Oya National Park is famed for its flora and fauna.

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka, Gal Oya National Park is truly one of the country’s hidden gems boasting of elephants, leopards, and birds. In this post, we delve into some of the essential facets of the Gal Oya National Park.

Created in 1945 by the Gal Oya Development Board, the national park was built to secure the catchment area of Sri Lanka’s largest reservoir, Senanayake Samudraya. It was then handed over to the Department of Wildlife Conservation in 1965.

Situated in the south-east corner of Sri Lanka, Gal Oya National Park is spread over 25,000 hectares of evergreen forest. Often touted as the least-visited of national parks, Gal Oya is home to a herd of elephants that are seen throughout the year.

Gal Oya is 376 km Northeast from Colombo in Badulla District, with part of the park stretching into nearby Ampara District. We state our reasons.

Gal Oya National Park’s elevation varies from 30 meters to almost 900 meters and has a few of the highest peaks like Danigala, Nilgala, and Ulpotha. Furthermore, this region receives rain during the North-eastern monsoon with annual rainfall averaging 1700 millimeters (roughly about 66.93 inches).

Accessing the Gal Oya National Park

There are various modes of accessing the national park – crossing the Senanayake Samudraya by boat from Inginiyagala is one such alternative.

Senanayake Samudraya

The park is recognized for its boat safaris managed by the Wildlife Department. Halfway through on Monaragala – Arugam Bay road, you can leverage boat safari services at Siyambalanduwa.

Boat safari can be a wondrous experience around 6 in the morning and 3 pm, as you might not be in the scorching heat.

Birds at Gal Oya National Park

The Gal Oya National Park is a place to be if you are an ardent observer of birds or love the idea of bird-watching in the woods.

Gal Oya consists of about 150 different species of birds, which fly over the park all around the year. Some of the resident birds seen at the national park include the lesser adjutant, spot-billed Pelican, and Red-faced Malkoha.

Also, the national park accommodates water birds like the Indian cormorant, Oriental darter, Grey Heron, and Lesser Whistling Duck. Besides, some of the noteworthy raptors easily seen in this park are white-bellied sea eagle and grey-headed fish eagle.

What’s more, it’s also said that butterfly species like the endemic lesser albatross inhabit the park.

Gal Oya’s Wildlife

Although the park’s mammal population is significantly lesser in comparison to the birds, you can easily spot a few strolling around. To date, Gal Oya National park has recorded 32 species of terrestrial mammals.

Some of the notable mammals include Common Langur, endemic Toque Macaque, Leopard, Sloth bear, Elephant, Wild Boar, Water Buffalo, and three distinct species of deer.

Elephants are easy to spot and capture your attention as there will be herds of elephants swimming between the island in the Senanayaka Reservoir. This humongous creature is considered as the most active swimmers.

Also, the mugger crocodile and star tortoise are amongst the reptile species of the park found swimming across the reservoir.

Flora in Gal Oya National Park

Gal Oya is the paradise of flora and is bifurcated into three types – forest, shrub, and grassland. Almost 45% of Gal Oya is occupied by lush evergreen forest, while 33% area is of Savannah grasslands.

Gal Oya has a decent share of rare plants that are widely utilized as herbal medicine. Few of these plants are Pterocarpus marsupium, Careya Arborea, and Cassia fistula.

Safari at Gal Oya National Park

Gala Oya offers an overwhelming experience with the long jeep drives around the national park in the mornings and evenings.

To get bedazzled by the beauty of this park, we suggest you also take boat safaris. Traversing with a boat will get you to an island within the reservoir called the “Bird Island,” which is overcrowded with a flock of birds.

There are two routes with Jeep safaris – 5 km and 13 km. Both ways offer you an unobstructed view of elephants and leopards. The ideal time to visit the Gal Oya National Park is between March and July.

It is during the period when you witness the spectacle of herds of elephants swimming in the vast Senanayaka Samudra reservoir.

Ways to reach Gal Oya National Park

Entering the Gal Oya National Park is where the real excitement lies. There are many routes you can take to reach the national park. It can be reached from Colombo via Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Udawalawe, Thanamalwila, Wellaway, Monaragala, and north from Siyambalanduwa to Inginiyagala.

Gal Oya’s entrance is 20 km west from Ampara at Inginiyagala. Conveniently, Ampara can be reached by domestic flights as well.

Accommodation around Gal Oya National Park

Currently, the closest of rest houses or bungalows can be found at Inginiyagala and at Eekgal Aru, which is 23 km away from the park. However, we settled ourselves in the Gal Oya Lodge, which is reasonably close to the park. This entire property is enclosed with savannah grassland. We were startled by the neat and rustic rooms.

There is more to this lodge than just polished concrete floors and wooden walls. As you venture out of your room, you’ll find a central pool giving you a beautiful heart-stopping view. And relinquish yourself in the jaw-dropping view of the mountain backdrop.

Threats to the Gal Oya National Park

With Gal Oya haunted by activities such as Illegal logging, 30 acres of the forest has been eliminated. Out of all the damage done to the park, the smuggling of medicinal plants has been recorded the most number of times. It is believed that lack of ranger staff has made it difficult to prevent such hideous crimes.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation had come under criticism when it failed to send a veterinary surgeon to attend an injured elephant.

Why visit the Gal Oya National Park?

There are only a few places where you can catch a glimpse of Asian elephants living in tranquility. And Gala Oya is among those few places.

Gal Oya is lesser known by tourists, hence this place is a getaway if you are in quest of some “into the wild” experiences. With spellbinding views of towering mountains and scenic lake, photographers tout this park as million-dollars sight.

Aside from the wilderness and scenic views, the park is a shelter to local indigenous people called the “Veddas.” Do yourself a favor and soodle with the Veddas early in the morning to learn more about Gal Oya’s history.

Summing-up

Gal Oya is a place of serenity, which oozes calmness and diverts attention from the daily mundane life. Sri Lanka is one island that has been blessed with nature’s bounty. While it’s the best place to enjoy the sun, sand, and sea, it’s also worth visiting to explore the dense and magnificent green cover that envelopes the island.

Most tourists tend to holiday in the Southern region of Sri Lanka. Top tourist spots include Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, and Mirissa.

No matter where you’re staying, take a break from the beach and bar hopping to visit the Madu River Safari. This promising day excursion is worth a visit. With so much to see and do, you’ll not want the safari to end.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or wildlife aficionado, the emerald green pastures and swampy marshlands of the Madu Ganga River is a sight to sore eyes.

Overview

Madu Ganga is the second biggest wetland in Sri Lanka. The estuary is spread over 900 hectares of which 770 hectares are covered with water and is inhabited with 64 islands of which 15 islands have a larger landmass. Abundantly rich in biodiversity, in the area surrounding the Madu River you’ll find swampy marshlands covered in mangrove forests. It is also home to 300 species of plants and about 250 wildlife species.

How to Get There?

Madu River is one of the most important ecosystems in Sri Lanka. It is located south of Bentota and is about 100 kilometers from Colombo. If you’re coming from Colombo, we’d recommend you take the Galle-Colombo main road.

Madu Ganga River is situated in Balapitiya, along the country’s southern coast. The complicated network of lagoons and off-shoots open up into the Indian Ocean.

If you’re planning the day excursion from Hikkaduwa, it will take about 45 minutes while from Galle, it is about an hour’s drive. With azure blue water views, the drive to the starting point of the safari is extremely scenic.

Package Inclusions

Several boat companies offer special packages to large groups for the Madu Ganga River Safari. While you could always ask your resort to organize the tour for you, the other option is to go yourself and find a boat company in Balapitiya. They are mostly located along the river bank at the edge of Balapitiya town. It’s the best way to get a good deal and bargain as you walk along.

If you’re a group of four or six people, you get to rent the entire boat while smaller groups will have to pay per passenger.

Highlights of the Safari

  • Exciting boat safari
  • Chance to visit the mangroves
  • Visit to the old Buddhist Temple
  • Up-close to the marshland wildlife
  • Possibility to purchase top-quality fresh cinnamon
  • Visit to the outdoor fish massage parlor

The whole cruise of 1.5 hours costs US $15 per head. It includes entrance tickets to the Cinnamon Island as well as the Buddhist Temple. However, the fish spa is not included in the package and can be enjoyed at an additional fee of US $5.

Biodiversity of Madu River/Madu Ganga

The minute the Madu Riverboat safari begins, you’ll start traversing into dark and dangerous caverns formed by thick mangrove forests. It provides protection to a large number of aquatic birds, animal and plant species. It is inhabited by 247 animal species, 11 migrant bird species, 70 fish species, 50 species of butterfly and many numbers of other creatures. Get a chance to see crocodiles, water snakes, tree snakes, and wild boars in their natural habitat. You’ll also find a whole lot of crabs, shrimps, insects, fish, and amphibians.

wildlife in madu river

You’ll also sight a Kingfisher waiting for its prey, gigantic chameleons and monkeys nibbling fruits. There are also cormorants found in abundance which prey on fishes in the river. For avid bird watchers, the mangrove forests are literally a dream come true.

The daily occurring high and low tide keeps the salinity of the water in Madu Ganga under control. It also helps in maintaining a suitable ecosystem for mangrove vegetation.

First Stop: Cinnamon Island

As mentioned earlier, the Madu River is home to many small islands and islets. One island where the motorboat halts at is the Cinnamon Island. It is said that the primary source of income for the locals of the Madu Ganga region is the cinnamon industry.

At first sight, you may wonder what’s there to see in this barren island. Look closer, and you’ll find a home where just one family resides. The owner of the house is an elderly man that springs up into action the minute a tourist group arrives. A man of great skill in every sense, it’s heart-warming to see him demonstrate the process of producing cinnamon bark which involves de-barking the branches and air-drying them on the roof. Besides the demonstration, you will also get to see how the cinnamon bark looks before hardening and turning brown.

Cinnamon Island

You’ll also get to learn how ropes are made from coconut husk. Once the demonstration process is over, you will be served cinnamon tea, which is free of cost. At the end of the tour, you can buy the products made by the old man, which include cinnamon bark, cinnamon powder, and cinnamon oil. Each packet costs US $5. Though there’s no compulsion to purchase any of the products, we’d urge you to make some contribution. Since it’s their only source of a living, they expect tourists to help them. For the people living there, boat or ferry is the only mode of transport.

If you walk around the 200-meter small island, you’ll find several cinnamon plantations and coconut palms that are grown as a supplementary crop.

Second Stop: Buddhist Monastery

One of the larger inhabited islands in Madu Ganga is ‘Koth Duwa’ that houses the Buddhist Temple that dates back to the oldest kings of Sri Lanka. It’s usually the second stop in the Madu River Safari. The monastery comprises of many buildings and thus covers the entire island. The noteworthy places in the temple are Bo-tree, Image house, and Dagoba.

madu ganga buddhist monastery

Visitors, locals, and tourists are allowed to go inside the temple. However, at the entrance, it is mandatory to remove your shoes and hat/cap. For those with skimpy attire, the monks will give you a piece of cloth to cover your arms and legs. If you have a Buddha tattoo anyway on your body, make sure you cover it.

The Kothduwa Temple is also said to be home to the sacred relic of the tooth of the Buddha. You’ll also find a sacred fig tree. After admiring the beauty of the monastery, the young monks will show you a 150-year-old book made of palm leaves and will take you to seek the blessings of the main Buddhist priest. Here, a sacred thread will be tied on your wrist, which symbolizes protection. If you wish, you can make a small contribution to their donation box before you leave for the next island.

Third Stop: Fish Therapy

Ever imagined what a fish spa in the midst of the river seems like? Well, fish therapy at Madu Ganga will literally sweep you off your feet. Sailing through the mangroves, you’ll encounter several rectangular fish tanks teaming with Gourami fish. The primary purpose of these fish tanks is to provide fish therapy. Unlike many other fish spas that are enclosed, this one’s in the open and comes at a fraction of the cost.

fish therapy

The natural environment around the fish spa is fantastic, and you get uninterrupted, scenic views of the vast mangrove forests. The fish spa ticket is usually not included in the package, and thus you’ll have to purchase it at the site. It costs about US$5 per head. Even though you’re not familiar with fish spa guidelines, getting a massage here is relatively safe. At first, you may feel ticklish as the several fish chew away the dead skin on your feet. However, you’ll soon get used to it. Most fish spas in the Madu River Safari last for 20 minutes.

A day excursion to Madu River is undoubtedly going to be a memorable one. The wetland is not just the only natural attraction in the region but also an important income generator for the people living in the area.

The Madu River Safari is educational, refreshing, and therapeutic at the same time. It is also rated among the ten amazing things to do in Sri Lanka.

In the recent past, Sri Lanka came to be known as a popular travel destination. The country made it to the travel bucket-list of a large number of people from around the world. It was also a popular choice for Indian travelers who were seeking a quick international getaway, especially during long weekends.

Beach resorts, casinos, hill stations, and gastronomic seafood, made the island nation a preferred tourist destination. Last year 2018 also saw a rise in the number of tourists visiting Sri Lanka. It also became a popular location for destination weddings.

The country also made it to Lonely Planet’s top travel pick for 2019. While everything was looking good for ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, one horrific incident on a solemn occasion left the country devastated.

Following the serial suicide bombings on Easter Sunday at three churches and three luxury hotels, put the country on a catastrophic failure. Claiming over 250 lives and causing injuries to hundreds of others, the terror attacks have almost paralyzed the economy of the country. The greatest loss comes in the form of several lives being lost and injured.

Image result for sri lanka easter bombing

While panic seems to have gripped the entire island nation, the question still remains Will they be able to recover?’ The answer is YES.

The country is known for its fighting spirit. Despite the 26 years of civil war between the government and Tamil separatist groups in the north of the country and mass devastation caused by the tsunami in 2004, the country did emerge stronger and was able to restore peace and communal harmony. Even in bleak situations and sporadic incidents of violence, the tourism economy continued to flourish.

Being able to transform itself from a war-torn country to a top travel destination makes Sri Lanka extremely resilient.

Though tourists are switching to safer travel destinations, the country has already embarked on the road to recovery with the aid from neighboring countries and world power nations. In the immediate aftermath, the tourism dipped by 50% whilst the cancellation of flight bookings was at over 80%.

It’s appalling that Sri Lanka’s $4.4 billion tourism industry has been badly hit following the coordinated bombings. Also, tourism accounts for 5 percent of the country’s gross domestic product. However, the tourism industry stands strong and is working towards resorting to the world’s faith in their beautiful island home. They are continually deploying measures to tighten security and rebrand the economy of the country.

The Sri Lanka government is working to return its tourism to normalcy. They are putting every possible effort to put tourism back on track.

The saving grace is that terrorism rarely destroys tourism for good. It only causes an immediate decline in tourism demand. In order to prevent future terror attacks or any kind of retaliation amongst communities in Sri Lanka, the government is giving the highest priority to the following national issues:

National security

The National Security Council mechanism will be activated and the portfolios of Defence and of Law and Order will be placed in the hands of those who have the capacity to provide leadership. The government also plans to launch a 24-hour media response center that will respond to false reports that create fear among the general public.

Revival of the economy

The government aims at formulating a national policy for the revival of major sectors such as tourism which is currently the most affected after the bombings.

Decision making in Government

To ensure speedy and sensible decision making, only persons with the required competence should be appointed to key positions. The government plans to re-examine the capabilities of current holders of those positions.

Effective communication strategy

The need of the hour in Sri Lanka is to inspire confidence in the people of the country as well as internationally. Only when the government makes such efforts will they be able to reinforce the pursuit of vital economic objectives including attracting investment, attracting tourists and emerging as a country that has systems and processes.

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau (SLTPB) is also in the process of hiring a global public relations agency in order to carry out a communication strategy. The tourism industry is also looking at the government to provide a public security statement in order to update foreign governments.

Besides the above long-term measures, here are some of the other measures that were taken immediately following the bombings:

  • The Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs Minister personally visited those injured in the hospital and looked into their welfare and immediate requirements.
  • The government offered assistance to all victims, the damaged places of worship as well as the hotels affected by the attack.
  • The government deployed 15,000 troops on the ground to provide immediate assistance.
  • A comprehensive security plan was created to ensure the safety of tourists in hotels, beach resorts and places of tourist interest.
  • Sri Lanka Tourism appointed a special representative to the hospitals where injured tourists were receiving treatment post the attacks.
  • Three special representatives of Sri Lanka Tourism were also stationed at the Bandaranaike International Airport to assist tourists both arriving and departing.
  • Teams were deployed at hotels and airports to assist stranded tourists with hotel transfers, airline bookings, reuniting with their loved ones, itinerary changes and offering hospital treatment.
  • They also released an emergency local hotline number to assist tourists in Sir Lanka – 1912 and an emergency hotline to assist families of affected foreign nationals +94 11 2322485.
  • Only to make sure that the nation was not misled by unverified reports/information, the government blocked a range of social media sites. Internet shutdown was used as a tactic by the government to control online expression. Social media channels such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Viber, Snapchat and Facebook Messenger were down.

In the following months, the government of Sri Lanka will constantly need to reassure the people that they are always there to safeguard its people from acts of terrorism. This will only happen when all the political parties work together collectively setting aside their political differences and giving highest priority to national issues.

With Colombo reeling from one of the deadliest terror attacks, it is imperative that neighbors in the international community came forward and offered support to help rebuild the lives of those affected by the attacks. World leaders too expressed shock and grief at the bombings.

Following the attacks, embassies of various countries came together to offer assistance and aid to those largely affected by the terror attack.

  • The Hungarian government announced that they will offer EUR 28,100 in emergency aid to people gravely injured and children orphaned by the attacks. Besides this, the Hungarian government also said that they will look into providing other forms of large-scale assistance to the people of Sri Lanka.
  • The Israel Prime Minister too came forward and was willing to send aid to help the Sri Lankan authorities handle the aftermath of the attacks.
  • Prime Ministers from Pakistan, India, Britain, Russia, France, and the USA also expressed sadness and condolences in connection with tragic consequences of the terrorist acts.
  • The Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) also offered support to local aid experts on the ground. The agency decided to work alongside Islamic Relief, Muslim Aid, Christian Aid, and other faith agencies. They decided to address the needs of the families affected by the bombings by establishing psychological centers that would offer trauma counseling and practical assistance to the affected communities. The organization focuses on promoting peace and reconciliation at the grass-root level to help communities’ breakdown barriers.
  • The Sri Lankan Red Cross too came forward to help victims contact their loved ones, coordinate blood donations and provide psychological support. The President of the Sri Lankan Red Cross Society also released a message touching upon the emphasis of donations right now to help those affected by the attack.

The Colombo massacre is a devastating reminder of the prevalence of religious intolerance. Numerous world leaders referred to the bombings as an act of genocide.

To stand in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka, numerous buildings around the world were illuminated in Sri Lanka’s colours, some of which included the Flinders Street railway station in Melbourne, the Opera House in Sydney, the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, the Northern Spire Bridge and Penshaw Monument in Sunderland, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the Emirates Palace, ADNOC Headquarters, Capital Gate and Marina Mall in Abu Dhabi, the City Hall in Tel Aviv, the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg and the Sky Tower in Auckland. The Eiffel Tower in Paris went dark as a memorial for the victims of the bombings.

How you can help?

It’s true that the Colombo bombings took the lives of hundreds of innocent people. But now is the time when the global communities need to rally together to help the local communities. Here’s what you can do:

  • Donate to relief organizations: With the Easter Sunday bombings, hundreds of lives were affected and it will take months and years to recover from the loss of life, injuries, and trauma. International relief organizations such as Red Cross are constantly working towards providing material assistance and staging blood drives.
  • Volunteer: If you are near Colombo, you can even choose to volunteer to help out those in the affected areas. This could mean carrying and delivering supplies, helping at hospitals, taking care of children or caring for the elderly. Volunteer Sri Lanka is on the lookout for volunteers.
  • Promote tolerance: No matter which country you belong to across the world, you too can play your part. The bombings are a sheer reminder of the prevalence of religious intolerance, prejudice and social division across the world. The only way to put an end to this is by countering this hatred and spreading tolerance and acceptance. Counter people who spread misinformation and prejudiced views and focus on breaking bridges between communities.

Hatred is never the answer; love is the only solution to put an end to ghastly incidents and events like these.

During a recent interview, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena revealed that 99% of the suspects in Easter Sunday attacks on churches and hotels had been arrested and their explosive materials seized and that it is safe for tourists to return to the Indian Ocean island nation. He also said that the country is in a safe position right now.

The Sri Lankan Tourism Department also released a statement to reassure the world that the country is open for business as all possible security and safety measures were taken. The statement also read that the world-famous tourist sites, hotels, resorts, and beaches will also be open as usual.

To conclude, all we would like to say is that we stand strong with Sri Lanka. We believe in the country’s multicultural nature and its ability to rebuild what has been destroyed with renewed vigor. There is absolutely no place for terrorism in the country.

If you have planned trips to the country in the days, weeks and months ahead, go ahead and enjoy the beauty of the island nation. It’s worth seeing how the people of Sri Lanka keep on smiling even in the darkest of times. Nothing in the world can break the spirit of this beautiful nation.
